Catract Surgery Review - Types

There are two types of Cataract Surgery:

THis method, which is called Intracapasular Cataract Extraction, removes the lens and the lens capsule all together, one piece. This Cataract Surgery is very complicated and is very seldom done. Most of the time this operation is done in very high tech hospital with state of the art equipments. THe lens is removed and is replaced with an artificial lens that is made out of plastic. It is added in the sulcus or the inside of the chamber.

Another type of Cataract Surgery involves an ultrasonic hand piece with a steel or a titanum head. This tip vibrates. Throughout the operation the surgeon will then use an instrument called the chopper that cuts the nuclues into very tiny pieces which makes the procedure of emulsification much easier. After the C.S. is finished a probe called the "irrigation Aspiration" is used to clean out the material in the cortical. It is the most favored method and is called the Phacoemulsification.

Extracapsular conventional cataract Extraction. A Cataract Surgery that is focuses on the sclera and cornea. Due to the massive presurre and incision needed to be done on the eye. This type of surgery is usually done on patients with advanced levels of cataract hardening. A lot of incisions are done through out this operation.

All the above types of Cataract Surgery methods are based on how advanced the Cataract is in the eyes of the patients. Always the specific consultation is needed to be done by your ophthalmologist.
